Oshawa is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and is known as the "eastern gateway" of the Greater Toronto Area. The city is a prime transportation hub, served by Canada's leading corridor Highway 401, the main lines of Canadian Pacific and Canadian National railways, the Oshawa Municipal Airport with full Customs Canada service, and the expanding facilities of Oshawa Harbour.
Once tightly tied to the automotive industry, Oshawa is now undergoing an economic diversification. Information technology, sustainable energy, retail and service, agriculture and bioscience, transportation and warehousing are taking more important roles.
Today, Oshawa has developed into a modern city, with a healthy balance of residential, social, recreational, commercial, and industrial focuses. The downtown core was revitalized into a vibrant business area. Canada's newest university, the Ontario University Institute of Technology Oshawa Campus, is expecting fast increase of enrollment.
Indicators show that Oshawa's population will continue to rise. Real estate development has been full of activities, and new starts are in the sectors of residential units, university student housing, as well as commercial buildings. In particular, the central area by the Oshawa Creek has the biggest appreciation in values.
Although the cost of living is edging up, however, in terms of housing affordability, Oshawa still ranks the highest within Greater Toronto Area.
