Fredericton is the provincial capital of New Brunswick. The city situates in the centre of the fertile Saint John River valley, relatively far away from the ocean, and has a humid continental climate.
The city of Fredericton is built around the intersection of Saint John River and its major tributary Nashwaak River. The main river runs west-east, naturally dividing the city into the northside and the southside.
Downtown Fredericton, on the south side of the river, contains the city's historic buildings. The grand Legislative Building and Christ Church Cathedral date back to some 300 years of history. The University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University are also in this part of the city. The northside of the city are largely suburban neighbourhoods with service and retail businesses.
The population of Fredericton is predominantly of British origin. It takes the lead in cultural, artistic, and educational activities for the province as well as for Eastern Canada at large.
As a provincial capital, Fredericton's economy depends greatly on the public sector, its two major employers being the provincial government and the universities in the city. Currently, the city is successful in diversifying its economy to include growing information technology, light manufacturing and commercial sectors. It is one of the first cities in Canada to establish a municipality-wide free wireless network.
With affordable cost of living and high living standard, Fredericton is recently experiencing a growth of population. Value of construction has continued to increase. Residential housing as well as student rental properties are particularly in demand.
