 Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta. It is located in the north-central section of the province, creating extreme seasonal temperatures. The summers are generally warm, with an average temperature of 17C, while the winters are cold, with average temperatures of -10C. Wind chills make the temperatures seem much colder than they actually are.
The economy of the city is dependent on the oil and gas industry, but also relies on major employers such as IBM, General Electric, and Telus. Edmonton is known for its downtown Arts District, which houses many performing arts houses, theatres, and various live music venues, in addition to the University of Alberta district. Various areas are well known in the city for their nightlife, including Whyte Avenue, and the West Edmonton Mall, which draws in millions of visitors each year, as it is the largest shopping mall in North America.
There are over seventy museums in the city, including the Royal Alberta Museum, which houses over 10 million objects in its collection, as well as Fort Edmonton Park, which is Canada's largest living history museum. Edmonton also hosts several festivals throughout the year including the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, Whyte Avenue Art Walk, and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. The city is proud of its sports teams, who have been so successful, that the city has earned the title "City of Champions." Teams include the Edmonton Oilers, and the Eskimos. The University of Alberta, and Grant MacEwan College can also be found in the city.
