 Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, and is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The city is well known for its winter sports, as well as its annual Calgary Stampede, the largest rodeo in the world. The temperature is semi-arid, with long, cold winters, and short, moderately warm summers. Winters are often broken up by warm Chinook winds that blow into the city over the mountains, and the city is one of the sunniest in the country.
Calgary also has a diverse urban scene, but maintains its traditional culture of hotel saloons, football, and especially hockey. The city is a major scene for country music, and is often called "Nashville of the North." Tourists and locals alike visit several areas within the city known for their unique culture and nightlife, including 17th Avenue, Kensington, and Marda Loop. There are also many performing arts centers, museums, and art galleries found throughout the city. Other major destinations within the city include Heritage Park, Canada Olympic Park, and Spruce Meadows.
Much of the economy relies on the oil and gas industry, with companies such as Imperial Oil, Shell Canada, and Suncor Energy all calling Calgary home. Canadian Pacific Railway is also a major employer in the city. Calgary also has many major schooling institutions, including the University of Calgary, and Mount Royal College, as well as DeVry Career College, which has its only Canadian campus in Calgary. Area-wise, Calgary is almost as large as New York City and its boroughs.
