Markham has the pride of being the largest town in Canada. Located directly north of Toronto in the Regional Municipality of York, Markham in one of the fastest growing communities in Canada. It is the Canadian home to many of the largest technological companies in the world, including IBM, Motorola, Apple, and AMEX. The towns and cities of Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Toronto, Pickering, and Whitchurch-Stouffville surround Markham. The Don River, and the Rouge River also intersect the town. The town is popular because of its many parks and leisure areas, where is it easy to escape, and unwind from the busy city. Markham is also very proud of its history of farmland and marshes, and as a result, hosts the yearly Markham Fair that includes truck and tractor pulls, freestyle motorcross, daily parades of horses and ponies, endless competitions, and the ever-popular midway.
Throughout the year, there are many things to do as well, including art galleries, museums, markets, and still working farms. Theatres are an active part of the community, and the York Symphony Orchestra plays in the town. Different festivals are also held at various times of the year, including the Markham Jazz Festival, the Cornell Easter Egg Hunt, and the Markham Festival of Lights. While there are no universities within the town itself, several universities are in close proximity and can be easily reached using the local transit services. For shoppers, Markham has three major malls that each has more than 100 stores.
