 The city of Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba, and the province's largest in population. It is most well know for its proximity to hundreds of lakes, including Lake Winnipeg, and Lake Manitoba. The climate in the city ranges from extremes of hot to cold, and it is the coldest large city in North America. Winters are typically four to five months longs, and usually have an average temperature well below 0 C, with plenty of snow. However, the winter air is usually very dry, making the city feel much colder, especially when strong winds blow in from the northwest. Summers are generally very short, and have varying temperatures ranging from hot, to cold.
Winnipeg's economy ranges widely, and includes industries such as finance, food and beverage production, and tourism, have combined to create an economy that is one of the fastest growing economies in Canada. Winnipeg is well known for its art and culture, as many buildings in the downtown are have murals painted on their sides. The murals are a combination of advertisements, historical paintings, and school art projects. Film is also a big part of the city, with many major and independent films being filmed and produced here. The national historic site, The Forks, brings locals and visitors to its shops, river walkways and festivals, while museums, theatre companies, and art galleries bring in the people during the cold months. The city is also home to both the University of Manitoba, as well as the University of Winnipeg.
