Newfoundland and Labrador is a unique province consisting of two main parts, the island of Newfoundland, and the mainland of Labrador, with the majority of the population living on the island. Mining, oil, fishing and aquaculture are the main sources of jobs for the province, with tourism having a significant part of the economy. The province has recently seen a jump in its GDP, creating more jobs, and a surge in employment, which is important to keep in mind if planning on moving here. Tourists visit to go on numerous expeditions to iceberg watch, go on a whale watching expedition that is available generally throughout the year, or to experience the rich culture left behind by the early Viking settlers, which has created several historical sites.
Because of its coastal expanse, the province tends to have mild winters, and cool summers, with an average winter temperature of -5°C, and an average summer temperature of 15°C. However, Labrador is much colder, which explains for the lack of population in the area. The precipitation levels are high, with the wettest months being July and August.
Apartments in the province, especially in the bigger cities such as St. John's, tend to ask a higher monthly rent because of the amount of people that want to live within the city. However, make sure to search the area, because deals can often be found that include appliances, and washer/dryer hookups. And like many cities, St. John's offers many houses for rent that are extremely reasonable when shared with a roommate. Most places offer flexible lease terms, which allow you to negotiate your length of stay if you know in advance how long you want to stay in the area.
